9/15/2007 - News.com - Dead man wakes up during autopsy

No Photo

A VENEZUELAN man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realise something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Mr Camejo told newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor - and alive.

Mr Camejo showed the El Universal his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

9/13/2007 - Click on Detroit - DIY Guillotine

No Photo

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The body of a 41-year-old man was found in a wooded area next to a guillotine he built and used to kill himself, police said.

The man, from the Detroit suburb of Melvindale, was discovered Monday by workers from a shopping center near his home.

Groundskeeper from the Fairlane Green shopping center at Outer and Fairlane drive discovered the body shortly before 11 a.m. Monday.

Allen Park Deputy Police Chief Dale Covert said the roughly six-foot tall guillotine was bolted to a tree and included a swing arm. Covert said police also found several store receipts detailing the materials used to assemble the device.

"I can't even tell you how long it must have taken him to construct," he said. "This man obviously was very determined to end his life."

According to investigators, the man had to make several trips to carry the wooden and metal parts to the area in the woods.

Covert said the man lived within walking distance of the spot where he died.

Police said the man, whose identity police have not released, had been dead for two days.

The man did not leave a suicide note.

9/5/2007 - CNN - Hybrid embryos

No Photo

LONDON, England (AP) -- British authorities ruled Wednesday that research using animal eggs to create human stem cells could go forward in principle.

The research involves taking a cow or rabbit egg which no longer has its own DNA and injecting human genetic material. The egg is induced to divide, becoming a very early embryo from which stem cells could be extracted.

Some experts questioned whether residual animal traces might contaminate human DNA, thus invalidating the stem cell experiments.

Advocates of the research insist it would be a human embryo made in the shell of an animal egg, though a minute amount of animal genes remain. The resulting egg contains 13 animal genes compared with some 20,000-25,000 human genes.

9/4/2007 -  Yahoo - Airline sacrifices goats to appease sky god

Photo

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Officials at Nepal's state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday.

Nepal Airlines, which has two Boeing aircraft, has had to suspend some services in recent weeks due the problem.

The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome aircraft Sunday at Nepal's only international airport in Kathmandu in accordance with Hindu traditions, an official said.

"The snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights," said Raju K.C., a senior airline official, without explaining what the problem had been.

Local media last week blamed the company's woes on an electrical fault. The carrier runs international flights to five cities in Asia.

It is common in Nepal to sacrifice animals like goats and buffaloes to appease different Hindu deities.

8/31/2007 - The Town Talk - Taking body parts from dead woman not robbery

No Photo

BATON ROUGE (AP) -- A man accused of murdering and dismembering a woman should not face the death penalty because taking her victim's body parts was not "robbery," his attorney argued.

Sean Vincent Gillis, accused of killing eight women between 1994 and 2004, faces first-degree murder charges in the February 2004 death of Donna Bennett Johnston. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder last week in another of the deaths.

Under state law, Gillis can be convicted of first-degree murder - which could bring the death penalty - only if prosecutors prove an "aggravating circumstance." In a hearing Thursday, lawyers sparred over the prosecution argument that the death of Johnston met that definition because it occurred along with two other crimes, kidnapping and armed robbery.

The items taken in the robbery, proseutors said, were a belt, blanket, earring backing, and one of Johnston's arms and a tattoo from one of her legs.

But it isn't robbery to take body parts because they don't have any monetary value, defense attorney Steven Lemoine told state District Judge Bonnie Jackson. As for the other items, he said, they were just "left over" from the homicide.

"There is no market for the (body parts) Mr. Gillis is accused of taking," he said.

6/21/05 - Local 6 News - Vampire Bats Kill 11 People In Brazil

In less than two months, 11 people have died from rabies transmitted by vampire bats in the northern Brazilian state of Para, according to health officials.

Josefa Ferreira has lost five children -- all under the age of 5 years old -- because of rabies caused by bites from the vampire bats. According to her, none of her children received the vaccine.

Some residents believe that deforestation has driven the bats from their natural jungle habitat and led to the increased number of bites.

6/21/05 - Belling Hamherald - Lions rescue & guard beaten girl

No Photo

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) -- A 12-year-old girl who was abducted and beaten by men trying to force her into a marriage was found being guarded by three lions who apparently had chased off her captors, a policeman said Tuesday.

She was beaten repeatedly before she was found June 9 by police and relatives on the outskirts of Bita Genet, Wondimu said. She had been guarded by the lions for about half a day, he said.

"They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest," Wondimu said.

"If the lions had not come to her rescue, then it could have been much worse. Often these young girls are raped and severely beaten to force them to accept the marriage," he said.

Tilahun Kassa, a local government official who corroborated Wondimu's version of the events, said one of the men had wanted to marry the girl against her wishes.

"Everyone thinks this is some kind of miracle, because normally the lions would attack people," Wondimu said.

Stuart Williams, a wildlife expert with the rural development ministry, said the girl may have survived because she was crying from the trauma of her attack.

"A young girl whimpering could be mistaken for the mewing sound from a lion cub, which in turn could explain why they didn't eat her," Williams said.

6/19/05 - The Star - Six Legged Puppy

Cutest Little Hell Hound Ever

PORT KLANG: A puppy with two extra legs and a second penis is drawing curious stares at a temple in Pandamaran town near here.

Kwang Sung Temple committee member Tee Kim Huat said the caretaker saw the white puppy with dark brown patches sleeping at the temple entrance at 7am.

“He lifted the canine to place it elsewhere and was shocked to see that the puppy had six legs! Not only that, the male puppy also had an extra penis,” said Tee.

However, since it was an unusual dog, devotees felt that it was a bearer of good fortune and named the puppy Ong Fatt (Lucky One), said Tee.

6/18/05 - BBC News - Crucified nun dies in 'exorcism'

Father Daniel says the death was justified.

A Romanian nun has died after being bound to a cross, gagged and left alone for three days in a cold room in a convent, Romanian police have said. Members of the convent in north-east Romania claim Maricica Irina Cornici was possessed and that the crucifixion had been part of an exorcism ritual.

Cornici was found dead on the cross on Wednesday after fellow nuns called an ambulance, according to police.

A priest and four nuns were charged with imprisonment leading to death.

Police say the 23-year-old nun, who was denied food and drink throughout her ordeal, had been tied and chained to the cross and a towel pushed into her mouth to smother any sounds.

Local media reports that the young woman had arrived at the remote convent three months before, having initially gone there to visit a friend and opted to stay.

"They all said she was possessed and they were trying to cast out the evil spirits," police spokeswoman Michaela Straub said.

"God has performed a miracle for her, finally Irina is delivered from evil," AFP quoted the priest as saying.

"I don't understand why journalists are making such a fuss about this. Exorcism is a common practice in the heart of the Romanian Orthodox church and my methods are not at all unknown to other priests," Father Daniel added.

If found guilty of killing Cornici, Father Daniel and the accused nuns could face 20 years in jail.

6/17/05 - Fox News - Two-Faced Kitten Born in Oregon

Ain't it Cute?

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A newborn kitten recently entered the world with two faces and, hopefully, at least nine lives. Gemini was born Sunday with two mouths, two tongues, two noses and four eyes.

Bluetear, 40, said Gemini is much stronger and drinking more milk than in its first few days. Ross said that if the kitten does survive, it might need surgery to remove the extra tissue in between its two mouths.

Bluetear has been breeding different kinds of animals, starting with dogs, since 1980. Roughly three years ago, she discovered a litter of smaller than normal kittens she calls "miniature cats."

6/16/05 - BBC News - Boys 'used for human sacrifice'

No Photo

Children are being trafficked into the UK from Africa and used for human sacrifices, a confidential report for the Metropolitan Police suggests.

Children are being beaten and even murdered after being labelled as witches by pastors, the report leaked to BBC Radio 4's Today programme said. It follows the case of a girl who was accused of witchcraft by her guardians. Three people, including the girl's aunt, were convicted of trying to "beat the devil out of" the un-named 10-year-old - originally from Angola.

Today programme reporter Angus Stickler, who obtained the police report due to be published later this month, described it as "absolutely chilling".

"The most gruesome details come from the African communities," he said.

"This report talks of rituals, of witchcraft, being practised in churches in London. It is described as big business."

It said that people who are desperate seek out churches to cast spells for them.

"Members of the workshop said for spells to be powerful it required a sacrifice of a male child unblemished by circumcision," the report said.

1/30/04 - CNN - Prosecutors plan cannibal appeal

The Cannibal

The Victim

German prosecutors say they will appeal against the manslaughter conviction for a self-confessed cannibal who killed and ate a man who had asked to die.

Meiwes admitted killing and carving up Bernd Juergen Brandes but insisted it was all consensual.

Prosecutors wanted a life term, calling the man a "human butcher" who acted to "satisfy a sexual impulse." They said Meiwes should have known his victim was disturbed and said they would appeal, Reuters reported.

Meiwes' video of the killing, in March 2001, persuaded even prosecutors to concede the death was voluntary.

Media and observers were kept outside while the tape was shown to the court. One newspaper said a woman almost fainted during the film, which shows Meiwes talking to the severed head while he disembowels the body, hung from a hook.

Emotionless and calm, Meiwes recalled how he began the killing by cutting off the victim's penis at the victim's request, how they fried it in a pan and tried but failed to eat it.

Brandes had traveled from Berlin after answering Meiwes' advert. Meiwes then told how they waited for hours until the victim, weakened by loss of blood from his wound, fell unconscious.

He then stabbed Brandes to death, cut him in pieces and ate 20 kilograms of him over the following months, defrosting pieces portion by portion. Psychiatric experts have found Meiwes to be sane and fit to stand trial.

He told the court he had fantasized since puberty about consuming a man. But he said he regretted the deed and would not repeat it. "I had my big kick and don't need to do this any more," he told the court.

10/7/99 - CNN - (Book) 'Weird Science' examines the realm of the paranormal

No Photo

In "Weird Science: An Expert Explains Ghosts, Voodoo, the UFO Conspiracy, and Other Paranormal Phenomena," White examines the realm of the paranormal with the eye of a scientist. He concludes that some phenomena that appear to be supernatural in origin have more mundane explanations. He also concludes that science hasn't found an explanation for everything.

Take, for example, vampires. While a kind of faux vampirism is fashionable these days in some circles that favor "gothic chic," White suggests the vampire legend may have grown from a genetic defect that afflicted isolated communities in central Europe centuries ago. Identified in 1985, the disorder known as porphyria blocks production of a protein that binds iron in the blood to a chemical known as a "porphyrin ring." The result is a set of physical characteristics familiar to Bela Lugosi fans.

"First," White writes, "those suffering from porphyria look severely anemic because their hemoglobin is not being utilized efficiently and their blood is not as oxygenated as it should be. Second, the porphyrin rings that cannot do their job are deposited in the subcutaneous fat beneath the skin. The chemical is photosensitive, and in sunlight it can release electrons that damage the skin and may cause severe blistering -- hence the vampire's fear of sunlight."

White asserts that advances in the understanding of the human body and its biochemical processes can account for a wide range of phenomena -- from faith healing to the tunnel of light often said to accompany near-death experiences.

But other phenomena aren't so easily dismissed. He notes that crop circles -- a media sensation in England for several years -- cannot all be explained as hoaxes. But White says the rationale for the few that remain is most likely found in meteorology, not UFOs.

7/31/01 - CNN - Ghost scare sparks fatal stampede

No Photo

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Ghosts are being blamed for starting a stampede at a boarding school in Indonesia in which two girls died.

The two pupils were killed and dozens of others were seriously injured in a mass panic Sunday after a woman's scream was reportedly heard rippling through the school building, the Indonesian language news Website detik.com reported.

The incident occurred mid-way during a recital of passages from the Muslim holy book, the Koran, by about 100 students at the school in the province of East Java.

"The loud voice was heard from every direction," one girl was quoted by the Website as saying.

8/18/00 - CNN - Sniffing out history -- and ghosts

Louisville's Seelbach Hotel is filled with the musty odors of a rich history, including the haunting tale of the lady in blue. Back in 1907, a young bride was handed the horrifying news that her new husband had been killed in an accident on his way to the wedding reception in the hotel ballroom.

Inconsolable and heart-broken, she threw herself down an elevator shaft. The wedding party found her broken body, clad in a blue dress, 10 stories below.

That elevator is still in use almost one century later. During our six-day stay, the elevator often moaned and shuddered -- a sure sign, we were told, that the lady in blue is still in mourning. Some guests report seeing her in the middle of the night, and most include a chilling detail: They recall the aroma of her perfume.

10/31/00 - CNN - Are There Ghosts Haunting The White House?

Tales of White House ghosts have been around for almost as long as the White House itself.

The ghost of a British soldier from the War of 1812 is said to walk the grounds at night. Another ghoulish tale has a long-deceased White House usher still turning off lights in the building while a former White House doorman is reported to still be on the job.

The spirit of Abigail Adams, the wife of America's second president John Adams, has been spotted hanging laundry in the East Wing of the White House.

And for all the people who have stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom of late, there is one who would not. Britain's Winston Churchill refused to sleep there after sighting President Abraham Lincoln's ghost lurking about.

White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry says he is a believer. "There are, from time to time, reports that the White House is haunted ... from time to time, mysterious appearances of figures from history," McCurry said. "I believe."

McCurry couldn't say if either of the Clintons have had any midnight encounters of the supernatural kind. "There have been serious people who have serious tales to tell about these encounters. Now, I haven't heard the president or the first lady tell any of these tales, but there are people who seriously believe that there is a haunting quality to the White House," he said.

6/11/01 - CNN - Nepal rids itself of royal ghosts

No Photo

KATMANDU, Nepal -- Nepal has held a Hindu traditional ceremony to rid itself of the ghosts of its royal massacre.

The ceremony on Monday was the first of two planned ceremonies during which holy men take the palace's woes into exile with them.

A Brahmin priest, the holiest figure in the Hindu faith, broke one of the ancient religion's most sacred taboos in order to assume the woes of a troubled palace.

Dressed to appear as a likeness of slain King Birendra, the priest -- a vegetarian all his life -- ate a meal laced with animal marrow before leaving on elephant back on self-imposed exile in a remote part of the Himalayan mountain kingdom.

A similar ceremony will be held for Birendra's son, Dipendra, who witnesses say mowed down the king, queen and seven other relatives with a submachine gun before killing himself.

He was named king briefly as he lay dying in a coma, despite being the prime suspect in the killings, and so by tradition the "katto" ceremony must be held for him as well.
